Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is an illness characterised by: extreme fatigue, sleep disturbance and non-restorative sleep, swollen glands and/or sore throat, muscle and joint aches and pain, impaired concentration and memory and changes in mood.

It is possible to suffer other illnesses at the same time, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, anxiety or depression, fibromyalgia are common but could also include heart disease, gynaecological problems or diabetes.

The causes of CFS are not fully understood, but possible causes include: Persistent viral infection, disturbance of the hypothalamic pituitary axis, primary muscle/nerve disease, autonomic nervous system disease, neural hypersensitivity syndrome, prolonged and persistent stress.

The Physical effects of CFS & M.E are: People with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome CFS and M.E tend to take prolonged rest which may cause: changes in body temperature, e.g. hot flushes and night sweats, changes in muscle function resulting in pain and discomfort, reduced calcium levels, reduced ability to exercise, deconditioning of heart and blood vessels, impairment of the viral immune system leading to a lowered ability fight off viral infections, problems with sleep, appetite and alertness, chages in mental funtion including redued concentration and impaired short term memory.

There is no cure for CFS but there are a number of helpful strategies and techniques that can be used. These include:
Deep relaxation, activity management, graded exercise therapy, medications and complementary therapies.
